Back to School: Learn Your CBD’s
You’ve undoubtedly heard the buzz about CBD also known as cannabidiol. We’ve broken down everything you need to know so that you can experience CBD and receive the maximum benefits of this amazing compound. From oils and tinctures, creams and lotions and edibles and vaping products, there is a whole world of CBD to explore to help manage stress, get better sleep or help achy muscles after a hard workout.
What is CBD? The cannabis or marijuana plant has hundreds of active compounds, including CBD. Hemp-derived CBD is packed with health and wellness benefits by working with your body’s endocannabinoid system. THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is the well-known compound that will cause the sensation of being high, due to its psychoactive properties. CBD does not contain THC. With CBD, you’ll receive all of the therapeutic benefits but you’ll never get high since it is nonpsychoactive. Plus, it is legal to possess CBD in all 50 states.
Why is CBD effective? Your body has a system called the endocannabinoid system or ECS. There, cannabinoids are produced. These endocannabinoids, as they’re called, are in charge of regulating a number of things like inflammation, pain response, mood, stress, memory, immunity, sleep and appetite. Hemp-derived CBD works with your ECS to encourage the production of more endocannabinoids, which is a powerful way to achieve balance in your body. Unlike an isolated system, the ECS flows throughout your body, impacting nearly every organ in your central and peripheral nervous system, so the benefits of CBD are shared in your entire body.
Can CBD really help my pet? It can. Cats and dogs also have an endocannabinoid system, just as humans do. In fact, all mammals have an ECS. So the wellness benefits that we enjoy in managing anxiety and more are possible for our pets by using a few drops of CBD oil in their food, water, or treats.
Why should I use CBD? CBD oil has been used to provide relief from a multitude of conditions including inflammation, chronic pain, seizures, depression and autoimmune diseases. The research is promising for hemp-derived CBD to have a positive effect on people dealing with various anxiety disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), seasonal affective disorder (SAD), panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
What should I look for when buying CBD? Always do your research and ask where the CBD oil originated. Local is best. Is it organic? Has third party testing occurred to ensure pure, CBD that is free from contaminants? If customer service doesn’t answer your questions, this may not be the CBD brand for you. Transparency is everything.
How much is the right amount for me? Ah, dosage in CBD is key. Everyone is different so each person will have their own sweet spot for getting the desired results. Finding your correct dosage is critically essential. A useful rule of thumb is to start low and increase the dosage gradually over time. Less is more. Begin by taking 5-10 milligrams of CBD twice per day, preferably when you get up and before you go to sleep. Your body needs to adjust, so try this amount out for a week. If your desired results are still elusive, increase the amount slightly, increasing the dosage every 4 days until you find your optimal dosage. If you experience any side effects like nausea or headaches, which is a sign that you may be taking too much, lower your dosage. Over time, you might need to adjust your dosage as you may develop a tolerance.
